NEW OIILEANS Chiropractor (Dr.) Nicholas J. Athens stripped the megahyped Super Bowl to its bare bones. Thirty-five of the 47 49ers came to him and an associate for treatment Saturday night (the night before the Super Bowl) in the Hilton Hotel. Others visited him Sunday morning, just hours before the Super Bowl. "When something feels good to their bodies, they (athletes) stick with it," Athens said. He began working with (49er running back) Roger Craig in 1982. |
"He was seven years ahead of his time. He stood up to the controversy," said Athens. "He wanted drug-free health care, and he hasn't missed a game in eight years." One by one the 49ers have started to come to him. (Wide receiver) Jerry Rice and (quarterback) Joe Montana are among his patients. (As are pro-bowl players Kenna Turner, Russ Francis, and Wendel Tyler.) The chiropractic game plan is to keep the spine balanced. "We look at the spine as the circuit breaker to the body," Athens said. |
